Independent Project Idea (Quarter 3)

Emily Shur's Photography-

I want to emulate this photographer because I like her use of light, colors and negative space.

Self Portrait

During the first year of photography class I became attracted to movement of some kind in film. So for my metaphorical self portrait I decided to use a slow shutter speed to create movement within the photograph. I set myself up in front of a white wall with lots of natural lighting and came out with one photo I liked. I edited that one two different ways and made a diptych of them which resulted in a close to symmetrical piece.

Independent Project - Homemade Cuisine

Briefly describe the image. What do you see? What is the subject? Content? etc.

• Pictured is a middle aged man with wiry hair. He has a bristly mustache and is wearing a flannel shirt. He is staring directly at the photographer's lens. The photo is a B&W portrait.

What is the most striking aspect of the piece and what did the artist do to make this stand out?

• The detail that the photo brings intensifies the man's already fierce glare by setting the depth of field to only focus on the man's face leaving the flannel shirt slightly blurry.

How does the photograph make you feel? Why do you think that is? What techniques did the artist employ to make you feel this way?

• The photograph makes me feel scrutinized by the subject because of his gaze and the detail of his face (depth of field).  

What questions or insight does the show and particularly this piece bring up for you?

• What camera/film and which settings were used to obtain such detail.

Are you inspired by anything you saw? How might you use some of the ideas/techniques in your own work?

• I really enjoyed each photo and will try to get detail like this.

Food Photography

To give the photo a more home-style feel I used a small rustic spoon (dipped in jam) and a canning jar while shooting in front of a well back-lit outside patio.

Then and Now

Stroheckers Park circa 2001 - I have grown up and I have been surrounded by the same great people everyday, making everlasting friendships. But I have evolved from a naive child into an adequate person with a little help from my friends (Pictured from left to right: Madison Butler, Me, and Emma Siddall).
